Richard Holbrooke was focused on mission at the end

Richard Holbrooke was focused on mission at the end

WASHINGTON — Legendary diplomat Richard Holbrooke's final assignment — running the civilian effort to bring peace and security to Afghanistan and Pakistan — may have been the most daunting of his career. His death Monday before he had a chance to finish that work leaves his legacy incomplete and creates a gap in the Obama administration's ongoing effort to lay the groundwork for peace.
As the major focus remains on military operations, Holbrooke "probably died before his moment in this war arrived," said Robert Lamb, an expert on Afghanistan at the non-partisan Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Holbrooke apparently worried that his work wasn't done, even to the end. As doctors prepared for a 21-hour surgery over the weekend to repair his torn aorta, they had trouble getting him to relax, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said Tuesday.
